Service drivers between the company and the customer

The Transport and logistics industry is booming like never! Every day, millions of goods must be delivered from one place to another, and the services provided. In recent years, the rapid development of the online trade has strongly contributed to this growth. Thereby goods are usually delivered by package carriers. A special type of delivery is taken over by service drivers, which – as the name suggests – provide an additional service to the customer.

Fields of activity of the service driver

Service drivers are employed in companies that offer a further service for its customers, such as the installation of equipment or training for this. Prior to the start of a tour, they put together their route, receive goods and delivery notes, check them for completeness, and load the vehicle. They then drive to all destinations in the planned order and pass packets to the receivers, carry pieces of furniture or devices, as appropriate, into the house, or transport goods for the retail trade into the storage rooms. In addition, they advise the customer, introduce the operation of a supplied device, or to take complaints. After the delivery, they get delivery notes acknowledged and accept payments. At the end of their tour, they unload the vehicle and forward picked-up goods or undeliverable shipments, orders, delivery papers and documents to the appropriate areas. Service drivers vary towards CEP drivers (courier, express & postal service providers) to the extent that they provide an additional service for or at the customer, whereas CEP-drivers are only responsible for the delivery of goods.

Training occupations in the transport and the traffic and transport sector

In the traffic and transport sector, there are a variety of apprenticeships. Overall, in 2016 27.240 young people signed a training contract to learn one of the professions in this industry, according to the Federal Association of Road Haulage, Logistics & Disposal (BGL). Of these, nearly 3.000 young people have completed a contract for a company-based training as a professional driver. Only 61 people have opted for training as a service driver. This number will surely change in the next few years. Especially the developments in the online trade and increasing demands to the logistics, trigger many transport companies to switch to a holistic service portfolio. Then the demand for all-round-talents and service drivers will rapidly grow.
