Same Day Delivery – What is the customer really expecting?

Predictability is the most important factor in parcel delivery

For the majority of respondents, it is important to know when exactly their ordered product will be delivered. Reliability is the key to success. A seamless live-tracking that goes beyond the current standard "track and trace" (in German something like "Verfolgung und Rückverfolgung"), is necessary. This allows the customer to be notified when the package will arrive and, accordingly, be home when the delivery arrives. Herewith annoying collections of pack stations, or partnershops, the wait for the parcel carrier or the wait for the second delivery attempt is avoided.

Time window delivery! Yes, but very price-sensitive

The time window delivery is another important factor in the choice of the package deliverer. In this way, the customer does not have to plan his day around the parcel delivery but can select a point in time in which he is already home. The most popular time frame remains from 6:00am – 6:00pm.

However, the customer is very price-sensitive at this point, and only 24% of the respondents are, according to our survey, ready to pay money for a time window delivery, more than 50%, on the other hand, are ready to pay money for a same-day delivery service.

The relevant product groups for same-day delivery

Not every product is equally suitable for same-day delivery, therefore it must be ensured that the customer has a need to receive the desired product on the same day, on the other hand, the shopping cart value has to be correspondingly high, so the additional costs for same-day delivery are acceptable (shopping cart value of >80€). This is especially true for the product groups of fashion and electronics, the average value of goods, as well as their high emotional attachment, make them one of the ideal products for same-day delivery.
