Definition

The Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) is an 18-digit unique identification number used in the logistics and supply chain industry to identify individual shipping containers, pallets, or other logistics units. FAQ

The SSCC consists of an 18-digit number structured as follows: 1. A one-digit Extension Digit (0-9). 2. A seven-digit GS1 Company Prefix (assigned to the organizing company). 3. A nine-digit Serial Reference Number (unique within the company). 4. A one-digit Check Digit (verifies the code's accuracy).
The SSCC uniquely identifies logistics units like shipping containers or pallets. It enables efficient tracking and tracing throughout the transport process, facilitating smooth communication between supply chain partners and streamlining goods flow from the manufacturer to the final consumer.
In EDI systems, the SSCC serves as a unique identifier for logistics units. It enables automatic data exchange about shipments between supply chain partners, enhancing error reduction, efficiency, and visibility throughout the transportation process.
SSCC should not be reused within one year of the shipment date under the same GS1 Company Prefix. After one year, it can be reassigned to a different logistics unit.
Example or usage in road freight logistics

A manufacturer assigns an SSCC to each pallet of goods shipped to a distributor. The SSCC, included on the pallet's barcode label, allows the distributor to scan the code upon receipt, facilitating quick item identification and inventory updates. During transit, the SSCC helps track the pallet's progress and status sharing among the manufacturer, carrier, and distributor.
