FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding electric trucks & renewable diesel

HVO is a renewable diesel produced primarily from food waste products such as used cooking oil. HVO can be mixed with fossil diesel from 1% - 100% without any engine performance or maintenance cycle impacts. That means that carriers can use their existing vehicles while reducing carbon emissions by up to 90%.
Electric trucks can be powered by grid electricity and reduce emissions by approximately 63% on average in Europe. When powered by 100% renewable electricity, electric trucks are able to operate emissions free. Over the lifecycle of the trucks, electric trucks are an excellent solution for full decarbonization of heavy duty transport - especially on high-volume short- and medium-haul lanes.
In 2024, the leading production-scale electric truck offered nearly 400 km of range. By 2025, that figure has surpassed 500 km — and in 2026, the first 600 km-range models will enter production across Europe.
Electric trucks are already cheaper in some cases today and are expected to become the primary mode of road transportation by 2030. Check out our latest white paper to learn when and under which conditions electric vehicles outperform diesel.
Electric trucks drastically reduce all types of pollution, including carbon emissions, when compared to fossil-fuel-powered Diesel trucks. Electric trucks need one battery for 8-10 years of operations while fossil-fuel vehicles need to be continuously fed with fuel extracted from the Earth, processed and burned. For this reason, the carbon emission from battery electric vehicles is already lower than running a Diesel truck within 1 year of operation.
Truck batteries typically have a useful lifespan of 8–10 years. After that, they are usually refurbished for a second life as commercial stationary batteries, extending their use by another 8–10 years. Following this multi-decade lifecycle, the lithium is then recycled for further applications
Batteries are getting stronger, denser and more capable every year. At the same time their costs are plummeting, leading to a double-exponential improvement in the technology. Many batter experts expect that in the next decade the next generation of batteries will replace lithium-based battery chemistry with sodium-based battery chemistry. Sodium can be extracted from salt in the ocean, meaning very little environmental impact and lots of carbon reductions through electrification with renewable electricity.
If all cars and trucks in Europe were to go electric tomorrow, we would need about 12-15% more electricity than we currently have on the grid today. The main question for transportation companies will be when and where to charge to get the most economic conditions for their charging - in order to be competitive in the market.
The electricity system is constantly evolving and expanding, primarily due to the increase in renewable solar and wind energy entering the grids around the world. Each year, grid electricity gets greener than the year before, meaning that a truck will reduce emissions more each year that it is on the road. Additionally, individual operators may install solar and batteries at their locations or purchase guarantees of origin, providing access to 100% renewable electricity - leading to full decarbonization of battery electric transports.
